# Categories and Item Assignments

Categories can be loaded from Magento, maintained in a tree view, and uploaded back. Item assignments are synchronized separately from category master data.

### What You See in the Tree

<table data-view="cards"><thead><tr><th></th><th></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Hierarchy</strong></td><td>Parent, level, and indentation show the position in the category tree.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Sort Order</strong></td><td>Position and drag-and-drop determine the order.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Shop Status</strong></td><td>Magento ID, active status, and sync status show the latest state.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Item Count</strong></td><td>Assignments are loaded or uploaded separately.</td></tr></tbody></table>

### Moving a Category Safely

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
**Refresh the tree**

Load the current structure from Magento before making changes.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Drag the category by its handle**

Drop it onto another category to nest it; drop above or below to re-sort.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Review changes**

Check highlighted rows, parent ID, and position.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Confirm save**

Only the save action applies the buffered changes.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Verify Magento navigation**

Check category path, visibility, and item assignments in the shop.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Upload Sequence

1. Provide the parent category.
2. Review and upload category master data.
3. Synchronize item assignments.
4. Verify the result in Magento.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Moving, renaming, or deleting can affect navigation, breadcrumbs, and URLs. Test structural changes in a sandbox first.
{% endhint %}

The **default category** only serves as a fallback and does not replace deliberate item assignment.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.solutioo.de/magento-2-api-connector/magento2_en_us/master-data-management/categories-and-item-assignments.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
