# CSV

## Delimiters and structure

* The CSV delimiter can be configured **per mapping**

 (on the mapping header card under *“CSV delimiter”*).
* **Default delimiter:**

 **Semicolon (`;`)** commonly used in German-speaking or European locale contexts.
* Other common delimiters:
 * **Comma (`,`)**
 * **Tab**
 * **Pipe (`|`)**
* **row 1** = Column headings,
* **row 2** = data
* **Encoding:** **UTF-8** is recommended.

## Decimal separator (per column)

The **decimal separator** which can be configured per column helps when files originate from systems using a different locale (USA: period, Germany: comma).

* **Automatic:** Based on the **Business Central server locale**.
* For both **periods (`.`)** and **comma (`,`):** values such as `1,234.56` are interpreted correctly; commas used as thousands separators are removed.

{% hint style="info" %}
If your CSV file uses **commas as field delimiters** *and* commas also **occur** in decimal numbers you must carefully align the **delimiter** and **decimal separator** settings; otherwise, parsing **errors** may occur.

German Excel “CSV” exports are often **semicolon-delimited** and use a **comma as the decimal separator**. In this case set the CSV delimiter to `;` and the decimal separator to **comma** **(`,`).**
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.solutioo.de/universal-import/universalimport_en_us/step-by-step-guide/integrations/csv.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
